UnBTV ciência: female senators in Brazil and Argentina

Resumo

Argentina pioneered gender quota policies for women in politics. Currently, 41% of Senate seats are occupied by women. In Brazil, only 15% of senate are women. A research by UnB compared the performance of female senators in both countries and concluded that the consolidated presence of women in parliament does not diminish the sexual division of labor in the Senate. They are more dedicated to agendas related to family, education and health (soft politics) than men, who focus their activities on issues like economy, the State politics and foreign relations (hard politics). Maria Luiza Walter's research at the Department of Latin American Studies of the University of Brasília (UnB), advised by Professor Delia Dutra, was considered the best thesis of 2019 by the Brazilian Association of Postgraduation and Research in Social Sciences (ANPOCS).
